Spring Migrants

I really should be blogging about my garden right now, especially since things are really starting to pop. But I haven't had a chance to take any photos. (Or read any other garden blogs for that matter!) However, a couple of weeks ago I took some photos of some of the birds that are migrating through my garden. Here are photos of two of my faves. The first shows an Indigo Bunting on the left and mostly Pine Siskins on the right. The fat bird above the seed cake is a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

In this next photo are a male and female pair of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (the female is sitting at the very top). Interestingly, the male let the female eat all she wanted on the seed cake before he partook.

I do hope they all stick around for this week when my friend from Austin is visiting. She's an avid birder (in fact, we first took birding classes together from Ed Kutac, eminent Texas birding authority, many moons ago!).

  1. Good to see a new post on your blog. I haven't seen an Indigo Bunting for about 20 years. It was during an unexpected heavy snowfall in May. The Indigo Buntings were at the feeder all day and it was a beautiful sight. Have a wonderful visit with your friend from Austin.

  2. Jean,

Very nice post about the birds! The male grosbeak must know it's getting near time to nest.... hence his patience while his mate ate her fill.

  3. Jean, I hope the Grosbeaks linger for you a while. I think I had a female at my feeder recently; she was very similar to the one in your picture. That Indigo Bunting is such an amazing shade of blue ... I wish one would stop by my garden!

  4. I wish I could lure the Rose-breasted Grosbeak to my garden. They are beautiful. I know what you mean about not having time to take photos and keep the garden up as well. I'm having the same dilemma.

  5. Jean, The indigo bunting is beautiful! I wonder if they travel through Tennessee! It's been years since a Rose Breasted grosbeak visited my garden! gail

  6. Oh how fun for a bird loving visitor. The indigo bunting is one I have only seen once, and not in my garden. Your shots are great. Have fun with your friend, take some photos! :-)

  8. A lovely post about the birds! I just love indigo buntings. We used to see them at the edge of our woods in New Hampshire in summertime. There is nothing like their azure shimmer through the trees. We had bluebirds too--a completely different blue, but just as beautiful.

How's the job going? You must come by for a visit if you ever have the energy!
